Purnululu

"The spirit can make people lose their thinking."

The main gorge that runs through Purnunulu is powerful men’s country. Nowgarlwin is the blackfella name for this place. Nowgarlwin is a sand frog. This place is known as the place where Nowgarlwin bury themselves in the sand.  The gorge is also where a small bat with long ears called Binjilmin lives. Binjilmin is highly siginificant in men’s initiation for Gija people. The gorge itself is so powerful that any strangers, particularly women, who enter can become severely disoriented and potentially lost forever if there is no custodian for that country present.
