Gulawana Wandjina (shell necklace Wandjina)

These are Gulawala Wandjinas (female wandjina's) from Edna's country near Isadel River. Gulawala is a site on Ngarinyin country (fresh water country). Edna's father, Jack Dale Mengenen (dec), took Edna to visit these Wandjinas, and many other sacred sites, as a child. Painting them now Edna remembers her father and the stories he shared with her and his strong connection to country. She suggests that the pearl shell is not from Ngarinyin country, "they must have traded with Worrora people (salt water people)." This is the Wurnan system (the law of gifts, trading and sharing resources that exists between clans).
