"I started at first doing boab and slate carving and then started painting in 2000 because I wanted to learn more about country. Mostly I paint my grandmother's and my mother's traditional country."
Gloria Mengil was born in Kununurra. She attended her local school and then went on to study General Education at Batchelor College (now Batchelor Institute) in the Northern Territory. As an emerging artist at Waringarri Aboriginal Arts, Gloria engages with the cultural traditions of representing country through repetition. She develops a cultural dialogue which looks at the connection between herself and the country she is painting. Her motifs of circular forms and moving lines represent the traditional country of her family.
