"We been walk 'em, no clothes, nothing. We proper bush people, no English."
Mary Meribida was born at Ilyara (Punmu) and lived there throughout her childhood. She is of the Yulparija people. As a young girl, Mary travelled around her country with her family living a traditional life. In the early 1970s her country was plagued by a severe drought and she and her people were forced to walk out of the desert in search of water. They travelled to the coastal town of Bidyadanga (formerly La Grange Mission).
Mary now lives at Bidyadanga with her husband, the artist Donald Moko.
Mary is represented by Short Street Gallery, Broome.
