The Inaugural Emerging Leaders Program, Perth 2013
The Emerging Leaders Program has been developed to provide professional development opportunities to Indigenous artists and arts workers from across the Kimberley. Its aim is to encourage and nurture identified emerging arts leaders and provide them with professional development, exposing them to state gallery practices including the care and display of works of art.
The Art Gallery of Western Australia will bring a group of up to fourteen individuals together on a regular basis over the life of the project (2013–2018). Activities will be undertaken that respond to artists’ and arts workers’ needs and will include a research focus for emerging leaders in relevant communities. This valuable two-way relationship enables emerging leaders to guide the Gallery through cultural protocols relevant to their community while providing an opportunity for emerging leaders to work alongside Gallery staff in Kimberley communities.
The inaugural Emerging Leaders Program was held in Perth at the Art Gallery of Western Australia 11–15 November 2013. The group of emerging leaders was introduced to the Gallery where it was told of the Gallery’s role in preserving art and culture for the future generations of Western Australia. Emerging leaders participated in an installation workshop run by ART ON THE MOVE and spent time with Gallery professionals to learn the various roles in maintaining the State Art Collection. Areas of expertise included Curatorial, Conservation, Registration and Installation.
