Wilkinkarra

Tjumpo has painted some important country, south of Balgo, in The Great Sandy Desert. This country is near the vast salt lake of Wilkinkarra, or Lake Mackay. In the Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime), this country was wet with water running all through it. The water was brought forth by the ancestral snake, Wannayarra, who entered and exited the earth through the two circles located at the top and bottom of the painting. By going into the ground, the snake released the water which ran all across the tali (sand dunes) which dominate the landscape of the area.
