Wandjina & Unguds

"When I began painting this picture, I thought of the Wandjina and all the Ungud animals that are special and have stories for them. For the kangaroo and the emu they represent the Milky Way. When you look at the night sky on a cold night you can see the shape of the emu and the kangaroo. The goanna had the poison before the snake stole it from him. The long necked turtle must walk on the back of children before they can eat it. If they do eat it a big rain will come for them. The snake is the one who made the rivers and are holders of water. The brolga was the one that made the quicksand in the flood story. The native cat is the one who died and the black headed python cut her hair off. And that is what happens when a women becomes a widow. The crocodile was the one that tried to take the fire underwater, but the parrot stole it from him and that’s people live on land. And the Dumbis are the Wandjinas servant."
