Mamara

Tjumpo has painted an aspect of the Wati Kutjarra (Two Men) story. The Wati Kutjarra were two Tjukurrpa (Dreamtime) heroes, brothers, who travelled the countryside on an epic journey, delivering the gifts of fire and cooking to people. This part of the story is set in the country well south of Balgo, at a tjurrnu (soakwater) called Mamara.

The central section of the painting shows the brothers camping by Mamara. On the way there, they'd speared a malu (hare wallaby). To celebrate, they lit a large fire and cooked the malu, before separating and travelling in different directions with a fire stick, lighting the country along the way.
